May 6th - 21st, 2004 : Calixte Henry Exhibit
" Le Quotidien "
Click here to see his paintings Calixte Henri 1933 Port au Prince Calixte Henri was born in Port au Prince. Having done his primary and secondary education at the Lycée Petion, Calixte then became a telegraph operator. In 1955 he began painting at the Centre d’Art, where for four years he studied under Philomé Obin. From 1959 on, he worked out of his own studio. He spent three years in the United States where he gained recognition from the Guggenheim Foundation. He was strongly influenced by the impressionists and cubists as well as certain Haitians, finding particular inspiration from both Braque and Seurat. As his methods evolve, Calixte abandoned brushes in favor of razor blades and later, the knife. His paintings developed from darker shades early on, into heightened finesse and transparency with more pastel tones and less contrast. Calixte Henri has always been very attached to Haitian life. His uncompromising sincerity has made him a highly respected artist who has carved and important niche in the history of Haitian art. Many younger artists have studied under him such as Dreux, Hilome Jose, Cameau Rameau, Joseph Cameau, Yves Cameau, Camy Rocher, Delnatus. @ Galerie D'Art Nader ---Coral Gables, Florida January 9th - 23th, 2004 : Franck Louissaint Exhibit
" Haiti in the Eye of the Artist: Images of daily life in Haiti "
Click here to see his paintings Franck Louissaint was a primitive painter when he came to the Art Center in 1969. He was then in his twenties. Louissaint learned drawing, composition and colors like his antecessors Cedor, Gourgue and the others. Today the painting that he is presenting to us shows us that he learned well. Daily life is present in each single painting of Louissaint. In his canvasses, time seems to have stopped. The characters are depicted right into the action. This purposely pause by the artist, leaves the viewer the pleasure to look, to even live the present moment, the situation. This life’s approach, of the daily labor of our men and women called for the use of a realistic style. For this, Franck Louissaint has worked relentlessly and alone, looking nevertheless for the encouragements of both Francene Murat and Antonio Joseph: his friends. He then attained such an acute realism that some people compare his art works to photography. But in reality, Franck Louissaint’s art goes further than photography. Nothing looks still. On the contrary, one expects the movement to resume anytime. Besides, that is a painting which does not depend on the hazard, on the chance to have the subject in the right time at the right place. It is rather a painting that lies on the artist’s acute sense of observation and good memory. In fact, Franck Louissaint chooses his subjects, put them in a context and treat them with a minutia that invites and fascinates the look. In front of a canvas by Franck Louissaint , one finds himself or herself as a spectator. Never the dialog was initiated between us and the subject. It is too occupied in its personal life, in its survival to even feel our presence. Franck Louisaint’s scenes are not narrative. They say a fact, a moment, without any comments. This fact, this moment, this painting is rendered to us in all his truth, a truth that itself raises some interrogations, induce some comments and force to reflection.

Using geometrical figures, at once pyramidal and circular, I conveyed to the piece an unequivocal impression of strength and determination. In the painting, the beaming rays of light create surroundings in which the blue and red Haitian flag is prominently displayed. The scene is ethereal and appears to float towards the heavens in a timeless ascension. The centerpiece, a bright-eyed J.J. Dessalines coifed with his imperial panache, contemplates the future of his nation like a true visionary. All around him, a carousel of dancing horses, free-spirited and newly-liberated, that spread their hoofed limbs energetically. From the outskirts, bugle-bearing celestial creatures announce the crowning achievement with fanfare. The intensity of the festivities brings about rumbling quakes and tremors throughout the scene, opening up cracks and fissures to allow Haiti’s coat of arms to emerge. Independence at last cloaks itself with its noblest words: Freedom, Equality, Fraternity. Lyonel Laurenceau
